I love me a good cryin’-into-my-beer kind of song! It’s these songs that tell a tale of heartbreak and loneliness down a long dark road with no light or destination. And, we’ve all trekked down that road a little bit or a lot.
The Rascal Flatts song, “Bless the Broken Road” perfectly captures the dimly lit road, but with a filter of hope. The song shines light into the cracks, showing that years of heartache can finally lead to something worth all the pain. And to pull off a good rendition of a song, you need a voice that’s got depth.
From a small town in Alabama, Kirk Jay has made his way to The Voice 2018 Blind Auditions. He steps on stage to sing the first country song he ever heard. The song came on the radio when Kirk was on his way to school, and he says that chills came all over his body. “This is something I want to pursue, I’m country ‘til the day I die, I promise.”
The lights are low, the music starts to play. His voice is projected, starting on a powerful note that resonates throughout the room. Kirk’s sound straddles two worlds in a small and sweet spot that’s got soul with a twang. Something that judge Kelly later comments on: “Here’s what I love about your voice, I think that it has a big soulful presence that country doesn’t have a lot of. I can represent both those worlds for you to help you as a coach.”
Adam and Blake turn around almost immediately after being impressed by the uniquely warm and personal tone in Kirk’s voice. It was only when the singer unleashed the last set of notes, the small vocal run in the word “road” just before the song ends, that it showed off the precise agility of his voice. Kelly and Jennifer turned around. All four judges may have swiveled in their chairs for different reasons, but it’s clear that they all want him on each of their respective teams.
Let’s just say Kirk rocks, each judge fights over him, and there’s a kiss between Blake and Adam that makes this particular performance one you don’t want to miss.
