A good song (or even a not so good song!) has the power to stir emotion. It has the uncanny ability to draw up feelings – good and bad. It can be as simple as hearing a few words or listening to an old melody you haven’t heard in years. A song can be so fully loaded with memories that they can transport us back into a long lost, sometimes forgotten place only accessible through music, to a time of joy or pain. They can be cathartic. Or, locked up and put on a shelf, never to be heard again.
Kelly Clarkson’s “Piece By Piece” as performed by Stephanie Skipper for “The Voice” was written by Kelly as a way to heal. The song details her relationship with her father as a child, and how he left the family, causing her to lose all faith in men. Until the day she met her husband, who restored her faith, piece by piece.
This is no light and airy song for the judge. It comes packed with memories and emotion about her personal life and how she struggled to overcome them. So when Stephanie belts out the first note of the song, Kelly knew immediately what to expect. She even says, “Oh no…” as she starts to crumble and tear up.
Stephanie really hits it out of the park, however. It’s pretty risky to choose a judge’s song to perform and a very emotional one at that! Even Blake and Alicia glance over to check on their fellow judge to see how she’s doing. As the song picks up momentum and gets more personal, Kelly lifts her arms up, giving in to Stephanie’s rendition of the heartfelt song.
