Large birds like cockatoos can be excellent pets, but owners should be aware that they require lots of love and care. They have a long life and will be around for a long time. In addition, they require a specific diet, exercise, and socialization.
Improper care can lead to health issues in these birds, including anxiety. Stress and anxiety can cause a bird to pull out their own feathers. Javi the cockatoo was rescued by Tallgrass Parrot Sanctuary in Kansas and was extremely neglected — she was a very sad sight.
When Javi arrived at the sanctuary, workers reported that she smelled like rotting garbage and stale cigarette butts. She was so stressed that she had plucked every single feather on her body that she could reach. But, she was relieved to finally be in capable and caring hands. Within a day, she was settling in and munching on fresh bananas and apples, delicious treats she had probably never enjoyed in her previous home.
Originally named Hobby, the sanctuary renamed her Javi. “We have decided to change Hobby’s name to Javi, (pronounced “Ha vee”) since no living being should be someone’s hobby,” the sanctuary wrote on Facebook.
Javi has been getting lots of love and proper care at the sanctuary and has had successful trips to the vet. There is even hope that she will grow back some of her feathers.
“This little girl is just blooming,” the sanctuary shared. “Today she said ‘I love you’ and our hearts just melted!” What a wonderful reward for all of the work that her rescuers do.
I’m so happy that this sweet bird has finally found a place where she can be cared for properly and recover from her neglect.
