Losing our beloved pets is an incredibly worrisome thought. According to the American Humane Association, approximately ten million dogs and cats are reported missing or stolen in a given year. Couple Brenda Osborne and her husband, owners of 13-year-old Ginger the Labrador mix, were in ruins when they discovered that their furry friend was missing.
Before Ginger’s escape, the duo had left for a weekend getaway only to come back to their pet gone. Even with the help from family and neighbors, all hope seemed to be lost as hours turned into days.
Four days had passed when Ginger’s family presumed Ginger was taken in by someone else, fending for herself miles away from home, or worse, dead. Then on day five, Brenda’s brother, Darrell Perkins, was about to take off to work in the morning when he heard a strange sound from afar, like a howl.
As Darrell sprinted towards the river to see where the sound was coming from, he discovered Ginger! However, unfortunately for Ginger, she had an injured leg and was stuck in mud very close to the river. Ginger must have slipped running near the river bank since it was very steep and slippery.
The area was so steep that the man had to get a hold of some friends to help him complete the rescue via a harness.
Fortunately, the pup was saved and taken to a vet for x-rays. Ginger is healing quickly, and her family is thrilled to have her back in the safety of their home.
According to Darrell, “I’m thankful that the river hadn’t raised a couple of feet, or she would have drowned.”
