What is your favorite thing about your birthday? Is it the fact that all the attention is on you? Or, are you absolutely ecstatic at the thought of being a year old (who is, really?)? Do you prefer a day being pampered by loved ones? Whatever it is, you know that you look forward to that one day in the year when it’s just YOUR day. Right?
I love a surprise birthday cake. A big ol’ fluffy vanilla, layered cake with banana filling, a thick layer of white icing, and sprinkles. And with fewer candles than there really should be! It’s fun to get it unknowingly and share it with friends and family. And if a cake isn’t your thing, a big bowl of pudding or a pie or horse food with candles in it should do the trick! Some thoughtful, ceremonial offering to symbolize another spin around the sun is what makes a birthday, a birthday!
And it’s sure that this horse was happy with his cake! Whether he’s had one before or never before, JD (also known as “Southside”) the horse sure was delighted to receive one.
To start, JD is the grandson of one of the greatest racehorses of all time, Secretariat, the American Thoroughbred racehorse who was a Triple Crown Winner in 1973. Only, JD isn’t nearly as fast, but he is darn cute and has other redeeming qualities instead!
This is a short but sweet video of JD’s caretakers singing “Happy Birthday” to him, and his hilariously fantastic reaction! The horse couldn’t be happier as he flashes everyone a HUGE smile, showing off his massive pearly whites. Everyone starts laughing because, well, JD is authentic. And he even blew out the candles!
Although it looks like a real cake that you and I would eat, it’s actually a gourmet “Happy Birthneigh” cake made specifically for horses. And according to his caretaker, no he didn’t eat the candles! Happy birthday and many more, JD!
