Imagine planning for your wedding day. You’re all excited and jittery at the same time. You want to make the best out of the day that you get to marry the love of your life, and you want to include anyone and everyone who wants to be a part of it. You also hope that things go as smooth as possible, and are anxious when there’s even the slightest hiccup in your planning process. Of course, you don’t want anything to take away from your big day.
But, imagine planning for something like this and not being able to live it out. A wedding is a wedding, regardless of how big or small it is, but there are some people who like to go the extra mile. D**k and Helen Lee was one such couple who wanted a wedding to remember, but fate had other plans in mind for the doting duo.
The now great-grandparents met when they were in high school, and have been high school sweethearts since. D**k proposed to Helen while he was serving as a coast guard in the Second World War, in 1943. The coast guard was on a 10-day leave and wanted to make the most out of his time at home. So, the two decided that they would settle for a civil ceremony and become one. What they later admitted was that they regretted not having an official church wedding when they had the chance. But, things can always fall into place, it is never too late for anything. This couple proves that.
Fast-forward 75 years and the happy couple is now living at the Elmcroft Nursing Home in Indiana. The staff and center got together to throw D**k and Helen a surprise wedding that they didn’t see coming. Everyone knew how deserving the couple really was, so they all got together to make their one wish come true.
Helen is dressed in white and looks beautiful; D**k is looking sharp in his suit, too. Big smiles wiped across their face the moment they found out what was going on. The two even got to enjoy some newly-weds perks on the day of their (re)wedding. I think it’s safe to say that they got everything they were looking for: a fun day filled with love, and one that officiates their marriage.
75 years is a beautiful marker of the love the two share, and I’m glad they had this wonderful celebration.
