The passing of a beloved pet that you’ve shared a life with for years is nothing short of heartbreaking. Whether abrupt or expected, a cherished furry friend leaves a legacy, and big paws to fill. There’s nothing like coming home from a long day at work and being greeted by your furry best friend — you know that he/she has been waiting for you all day, since the moment you stepped foot out of the house. After having lost your friend, I can’t begin to imagine how lonely the little things in life may really get. The pain is unimaginable.
Having lost his two dogs, Nemo and Lucy, only weeks apart, his creative and caring daughter, Jaleen devised a plan to ease her father’s pain. She wanted to pay respect to the dogs who passed while honoring their memory, but also knew that a brand new puppy might not fix the problem. Luckily, her idea worked.
At first, Dad is grumpy and irritated. It’s his birthday, and his stomach pains are acting up. From the moment he peels back the envelope and opens the card with a photo of a new puppy named Lumo, his mood completely changes. He goes from someone not looking for any company, even on his birthday, to be soft and emotional — it’s almost instant!
He melts as he undergoes the broad range of human emotion, crying immediately and without shame. Dad is beside himself, and can’t even look at the card as Jaleen steps in to read the kind words from “Lumo:”
“Hi, my name is Lumo I am a boy bichon. No, I am not Nemo nor could I ever be Lucy. My mommy brought me to bring you some happiness back into your life. So as we walk down this journey of life together, may we create our wonderful memories and rekindle the beautiful memories you had with Nemo and Lucy.”
Dad’s reaction then becomes one of childlike joy when Lumo is placed into his arms. The two bond in a tender personal moment as dad relives memories of his loved ones lost, but with a new fluffy bundle of joy to look forward to. His daughter couldn’t bring Nemo and Lucy back, but this thought was the next best thing to restoring her father’s happiness as much as possible. And, it worked.
