Growing up where in the winter it snows a lot, and in the summer it shines every day, I know firsthand what it means to be a homeowner in a place that has all four seasons! While having a very different spring, summer, winter, and fall can be beautiful, each season bringing its gifts to enjoy (apple picking in autumn, anyone?). The changing of seasons also brings a lot of hard work. To maintain your home, you better understand that putting in some elbow grease comes with the territory, like shoveling in January, mowing in March, pruning in June, raking in October, and so on!
The city knows that too. Especially in the town of Riesel, Texas, USA, when they deemed one woman’s lawn to be too out of control. So much so, the police had issued a warrant for her arrest! But wait, it gets better.
Gerry Suttle owns a beautiful, sprawling piece of land in her native small town – and lots of it. Gerry is also 75-years-old and isn’t as mobile as she once was. The woman even didn’t know that in her beloved town, it’s the law to keep your grass no higher than 18 inches! Already deep into the hot summer months, Gerry’s grass exceeded the acceptable height, and according to the police, they had sent her notices about her property, none of which she claimed to have received.
Because of this violation of city code, and zero response from her side, Gerry had a warrant for her arrest! That means, at any moment, someone could have shown up at her house to take her down to the police station. Upon hearing this terrifying news, of course, the woman was fraught with stress and uncertainty. At this point, summer in Texas is fierce and poses a health threat for seniors who can’t take on the extreme heat.
That’s when four young brothers in the neighborhood showed up to help her out. The Reynolds brothers heard about the woman’s plight and didn’t think it was right for her to go to jail for something so silly and trivial. They banded together with their lawn mowers, and weed whackers to take care of business. Even other members of the community pitched in, and in just two hours, the laborious work done in almost 100-degree weather was done.
“We haven’t met her before, but she’s 75 years old and needs some help out here mowing, it‘s the least we could do,” says one of the brothers, and it keeps her out of jail.
“I cannot believe this! I am very seldom without words, but this is one time you mark it down in history that I didn’t have something to say.” Gerry was grateful to the moon and back and rendered speechless because she was so touched by the brothers’ proactive and kind gesture.
