When we say that MacGuyvering is the best way to go when you’re on a pinch, we seriously mean it. If you feel that using lids to make burgers and your shoe to open a wine bottle weren’t enough reasons to think outside of the box, then there’s more to feed your fancy! Below are another five ways you can Macguyver out of any tough situation!
5. Need a double boiler? Use two pots.
This can be used for melting chocolate, keeping gravy warm or making an Italian custard. A double boiler is perfect for crafts too – melting wax, making candy and for soap. Easily make your own by using a pot with a mixing bowl or saucepan on top. Fill the lower one with water, and you’ve got yourself a DIY double boiler.
4. No vacuum sealer? All you need is water and a sealable bag.
Vacuum sealing helps food last longer, and is great for making things ahead of time to have them on hand for later. Fill your sink with water, and slowly submerge the filled (still open) bag into the water up to the seal, allowing the air to escape. Seal closed and you’re all set.
While this isn’t quite the same as an actual vacuum sealer, but it does the trick, and it works really well with sous vide.
3. No icing piping bag? Use a sealable bag.
Use a heavy-duty freezer bag, and cut off one of the lower corners. Roll down the sides of the bag, and fill with frosting. Twist the top and squeeze frosting out of the snipped corner onto cupcakes, cakes, and cookies!
2. Long recipe that needs to be held up? Use tongs.
Most recipes these days can be found online, but for the family favorites and the ones handed down from grandma, chances are they’re found on a recipe card or sheet. Use a pair of tongs, laid on its side to support the card/sheet upright for easy viewing – and less chance of making a mistake!
1. No can opener? Use your bare hands and a slab of concrete (Yes, really!)
