I think it’s a pretty common misconception that all girls grow up dreaming of their wedding day. While I’m sure that it’s true to some extent and that there are definitely people who do spend their formative years planning the perfect event, that just wasn’t me. Don’t get me wrong, I love weddings; just not my own.
While other girls married Barbie and Ken over and over again, I was busy taking care of My Little Ponies and Pound Puppies. When all my closest friends were planning their special day and asking me to be a bridesmaid, I was riding my real horses and looking after a mismatched pack of rescue dogs. But, some of the most fun memorable days I have had with my friends have been at weddings, even if they weren’t my own.
As someone who has attended more than my fair share of weddings and participated in quite a few as a Maid of Honor or a bridesmaid, I can assure you that not all weddings are created equal. Hopefully, a wedding is an accurate reflection of the couple and their lifestyle. In addition, it should take into account, at least in some small ways, the family and friends that they invite to attend. Above all, I hope that every couple is able to have a wedding day that is not only memorable but has all of the elements that they once dreamed of as children.
Unfortunately, I’ve been to some pretty boring weddings, with long, tedious ceremonies and receptions that were almost painful to attend. It’s hard to pinpoint a single thing that went wrong, but something just didn’t feel quite right. Maybe it was the food, perhaps the DJ just wasn’t good enough, or the crowd wasn’t feeling each others’ company? I don’t know, but I’ve been to a fair share of weddings where the dance floor was empty and people were just sitting around on their seats. Not fun!
Often times it happens that the food needs to be good for people to have half a good time, am I right? That’s 50% of your boredom killed, almost instantly!
On the other hand, I can tell you that some of the weddings where I have had the most fun were ones in which the bride and groom were determined to have fun themselves, and we were all happy to go along for the ride. When the bride and groom and super involved in their wedding, and have everyone along with them, there’s no time to think about the cold chicken parm served a few tables down!
