May 19, 2018, marks a special day for the monarchy, as well as for the rest of the world. There was so much buzz when Prince William announced his nuptials to Kate Middleton back in 2011, but this year saw the masses go berserk over the much-awaited wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
We’re not quite sure why there was so much buzz and speculation around this decision. We like to see it as two people, deeply in love, taking their relationship one step further. But, for a lot of people, things were different this time around because of Meghan — she’s American, a (now retired) actress, and she’s been married once before. Everything about Meghan was so unconventional and that’s what made her so interesting to the general public.
Going with the idea of being unconventional, the Windsor Castle saw some changes the moment Prince Harry announced his engagement to Meghan. No, these weren’t changes in the castle’s aesthetics or the structure of the monarchy, but just little things here and there that Meghan did. As we all know, the Royals have a set of rules that you just CANNOT break. There’s a protocol that has to be followed at all times.
But, here is a list of 12 rules that Meghan has broken since she’s become a part of the Royal family.
1. She’s very different from Kate Middleton
Ok, so this isn’t a rule that she’s breaking, but perhaps being unconventional isn’t a part of Royal protocol. She’s born in Los Angeles to a divorced set of parents and is the first-ever non-white member of the British family. Quite different from Kate, right? Nonetheless, this woman is a true inspiration!
2. She shows affection to Harry in public
The two hold hands and aren’t afraid to get cozy with one another when out and about. This practice is contrary to Prince William and Kate who are seldom seen showing any public display of affection.
3. She crosses her legs
Forget the “Duchess slant,” this gal is preaching what we women have always been taught! Although this newly-wed is trying her best to do the Duchess slant, she’s often seen crossing her legs just like us normal people.
4. She disclosed way too much information
As a royal, you’re not allowed to disclose information about your personal life! So, when Meghan featured on the cover of Vanity Fair, the headlines revealed one of the biggest mistakes she may have made. It read, “She’s Just Wild About Harry!” There was more to come on their relationship in the pages inside.
5. She’s worn a crossbody bag
Royal women hold clutches and purses to avoid shaking hands with anyone. In this case, the moment Meghan wore a crossbody bag, both her hands were freed. And thus, a fashion statement instantly became a huge controversy.
6. She isn’t religious
Meghan has never discussed her religious affiliation.
7. She’s a divorcee
Meghan first tied the knot with TV producer Trevor Engelson in 2011. Their marriage lasted two years and they were officially divorced in 2013.
8. She didn’t wear pantyhose
Seems like a fashion faux pas is always just waiting to happen. I can’t blame the girl, there are way too many rules! So, Meghan forgot to wear a pair of pantyhose for her engagement shoot with Harry and was, once again, under the radar of the Royal fashion police.
9. She has a political opinion
Where the Royals are asked to keep quiet about their political stance, Meghan has always been loud and proud about what she feels. She is a strong woman!
10. She got married in May
Queen Victoria made the saying, “marry in May, and rue the day.” Well, Meghan and Harry tied the knot in May, totally disregarding that!
11. She had a maid of honor
And bridesmaids! She’s the first of the Royal wives to do so.
12. She spent Christmas with the Queen
Christmas 2017 saw yet another change in the family. See, you are forbidden to spend Christmas with the Royal family unless you’re a part of it. But, last year, Prince Harry requested that his then-fiancee be allowed to attend the celebrations. She was given permission by the Queen.
