Dad Drives 1,100 Miles To Have Socially-Distant Birthday Lunch With Daughter

Has your birthday occurred during the C*********s? Mine has, and let me tell you, it was all sorts of weird. It definitely wasn’t the type of birthday I had been having for 23 years in a row. Missing guests, fewer gifts, no birthday cards in the mail: it wasn’t the same, that’s for sure. But I won’t complain! It was about the best that any birthday could be during a global pandemic, and for that, I am grateful.

But one dad deserves a big award for making his daughter’s birthday extra special despite the virus. On May 8, 2020, 53-year-old Julio Cesar Segura drove a total of 1,152 miles from El Paso to Austin, Texas just so he could deliver a birthday meal to his 19-year-old daughter. In total, the thoughtful father drove a grand total of 17 hours there and back!

“I left my house at 4:15am. I was missing her and I wanted to give her a surprise,” Mr. Segura said. “I decided to go the day before. I love her and I wanted to make sure she had a good birthday.”

But Dad didn’t give the surprise away. According to Birthday Girl, Diana Segura Lerma, she initially thought he was just going to have a birthday meal delivered to her.

“He told me that since he couldn’t do much he wanted to know what I’d like for lunch and he would send an Uber Eats order,” Lerma explained. “So I texted him what I wanted-the chicken fillet sandwich with pepperjack cheese, buffalo sauce and mayonnaise.”

Because her father brings her “that sandwich for lunch on [her] birthday every year” and “hasn’t missed a year,” the thoughtful gesture wasn’t really unusual, but it most definitely was appreciated.

But then Segura really surprised her.

“He showed up with the food and a poster board and balloons,” she said. “I was so excited. I haven’t seen him in months, since winter break. I didn’t think that I would see him again until August.”

Boy was she shocked!

No worries, though; they made sure the 30-minute lunch break was social distancing-friendly.

“We went to a little terrace and there were chairs that were really spread out. We ate several feet apart,” said the birthday girl.

Although Segura really went out of his way to make his daughter’s birthday extra special, he says it was all worth it. If she’s happy, he’s happy.

“I was driving the whole day but I was so happy on the way back. She deserved a good birthday.”

D’aww! What an adorable story. Everyone deserves a father like Segura!
