Lest we forget the heroes who fought a war for the life we live today. In honor and with great respect, the wartime choir D-Day Darlings stands as a reminder of the past as we move into the future.
In the final round of Britain’s Got Talent, the D-Day Darlings are pulling all the stops to deliver a heartfelt, nostalgic performance that has everyone moved to tears by the end. Plus, with the help of several special guests, their unique performance is one you won’t be able to take your eyes off of.
Simon Cowell and judges are seated and ready to be dazzled as the nine women take their position on stage. Already intriguing, each woman is dressed as though they just got off a plane from the 1940s. Donning military aviation attire, victory rolls, and pinned hair, and simple makeup topped off with iconic cherry red lipstick, the choir is very well-dressed for the part. They are standing in a v-formation against a stunning digital backdrop of a sunset-lit sky, with pinks and purples.
Originally written as a poem by Alice Duer Miller, “The White Cliffs of Dover” was made into a 1944 film and brought on stage as a theatrical production. It was also first made famous by wartime sweetheart Vera Lynn when she released a recording of it. The D-Day Darlings first sing short solos before coming together to unite their voices and sing the song together. It’s an old-time blast from the past, sung with love and pride.
The D-Day Darling wartime choir first came together as a trio in 2008. It was a mix of both a fascination and respect for the era as well as having familial ties to the Armed Forces. Founding member Katie Ashby’s grandfather Clifford Storr was an RAF Flight Navigator for the Lancaster Bomber.
With a focus on everything World War II, the D-Day Darlings have made regular appearances at historical sites and events, parades and any and every military and forties-themed event. It’s their talent, look and niche interest that has brought the group to Britain’s Got Talent stage, and they are ready to up the ante.
As if their performance didn’t resonate enough with the audience, right near the end, a stream of veterans wearing their full military attire come out to add a whole other layer of patriotism. People were in tears and moved by the show of respect of the whole spectacular performance. The camera even panned back into the audience to show the active military members who were in attendance.
