As a teen, I remember being thrown into the mix of high school, and homework, hobbies, a part-time job, and friends. Everything felt new and like unchartered water, every day a new exploration out into the abyss, and sometimes, things got a bit overwhelming. But, when this did happen, there was one thing that kept me grounded, and that was art. I was always able to go to my hobby, my passion, whenever I wanted and felt anchored amidst the craziness.
For 13-year-old Courtney Hadwin, it’s the same thing. When this tall, lanky and long-haired nervous-looking girl walked onto the stage, Mel B asked her what her favorite class was, to which she replied, “Music.” After watching this performance, there’s no doubt that Courtney’s passion and drive are centered around music. It’s where she goes to find herself, and it’s so evident.
The shy teen walks across the stage. She engages in a little back and forth with Mel B., who calls her “sweet,” which later turns out to be a little ironic. Courtney is sweet, but the moment she assumes the position and the music turns on, this timid girl turns into a hurricane. She is magically transformed into a whirlwind of fierce energy and talent, exuding an incredible abundance of confidence. She’s singing Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle” but has made the song into something of her own and clearly, the judges are beside themselves.
Once her incredible storm of vocal power and full-on stage presence (she ends her song by dramatically dropping to her knees) has simmered, every person in the room is on their feet clapping. Dad’s eyes are wide with pride for his daughter as Simon makes the first comment about the lion she turned into!
This is an exceptional performance because Courtney’s talent is mega, and as Howie put it, “You’re from a whole different era,” before he compares her to Janis Joplin being signed on the spot. While he can’t do that, he can certainly give the golden buzzer. And wow, does she ever deserve it! I can’t wait to see more of what Courtney’s got for the next round!
What did you think of the teen’s performance? Is she one of your favorite auditions from “America’s Got Talent?” We’d love to read your feedback in the comments.
