What are some of the best moments you remember with your mom? Is it spending time with her right before bed, as she read your favorite story to you over and over again? Was it her staying up into the wee hours of the morning, when you were a teen, and waiting for you to get home from a party safe and sound? Or, was it the moment you shared with her in the delivery room while you were birthing your own child?
Perhaps the moments you remember with mom include all of the above and more, but one thing is clear, mom is always around for everything. No questions asked.
In some way or another, moms have touched everyone’s life. While not everyone has one and some have learned to cope without one, a mother is still a part of you. And there are all kinds of mothers, from step-moms to foster moms to best friends who become moms and dog moms! Even nature is a mother, and she’s the most encompassing mom of all.
While Celine Dion is known for her incredible voice and long-standing career, this is a performance specifically for mothers. She sings “The Prayer,” on an episode of Oprah, where the lyrics have been tweaked to refer to mothers and to give deep thanks for everything they do. This is one of Oprah’s favorites!
The song is slow, and heartfelt, and shares how unconditional a mother’s love is. She sings about a mother’s true feelings and connection to her baby, asking the powers that be to help guide her and her baby on this journey together. Celine sings about what any mother wants for their child, a prayer for her child to be watched over and safe. “I pray you’ll be my eyes, and watch her where she goes. And help her to be wise, help me to let go.”
This is a beautiful reminder to thank moms everywhere, here and in heaven. Mom’s to be, moms who were and moms right now. Motherhood is special and beautiful, and it’s truly a gift.
