Any dance routine, whether it be a solo or in a group, requires hours of hard work, but in the end, performing on stage is what makes it completely worth it for some dancers. All routines are different, but all leave you with a grin, and thinking, “I wish I could dance like that.”
Maybe this video will make you think the same. In the clip below, the young dancers do a prop routine. A prop routine is a “routine with the primary focus utilizing a prop. The prop can be set aside briefly, but must be used during at least 75 % of the routine,” shares Dance DTS.
The young women in the video won first place in this routine! So, let’s talk about them, yeah?
The Black Diamonds, a high school dance team, performed at the Australian Drill Dance Championships and won first place in the prop precision routine because of their unique prop and the amazing use of it. The prop? White feathered fans that went perfectly with the theme, burlesque, and the outfits—short, blonde wigs and flapper-era dresses.
The incredible performance with the nine dancers begins with all of them close together, creating a square shape with their feathered fans as “Burlesque” by Christina Aguilera (from her same-titled movie “Burlesque”) comes on. Just as Christina’s voice blasts through the speakers, one single dancer pops up in the middle before the rest of the team joins in the dance.
The dance is brilliant, but it’s the use of the feathers that calls your attention. The dancers use the feathers expertly, creating illusions and using them in sync and to the beat of the song. Eventually, they lay on the floor, moving only their feathered fans without missing a beat!
A move at 2:47 with the fans makes the audience burst into cheers! And for the finale, the dancers end with their hands and feathered fans in the air, earning them cheers and applause.
If you’d like to see the awesome performance, here it is!
