Tween’s Performance Of “Defying Gravity” Mesmerizes Judges

Show tunes are a whole other can of worms. It’s pretty much acting through your voice. And if you take a second to notice, each show tune is an extremely dramatic version of everyday emotions. For example, if I wake up having a bad morning, I’ll look in the mirror and think “Ugh, it’s Monday,” brush my teeth, and then be moody until I have my coffee. Whereas in a show, it’ll be my “ugh” thoughts transformed into blaring high octave notes, colored stage lights, and arm gestures with incredible facial expressions and grandeur – then sitting down to the have the coffee like nothing happened while the audience applauds!

It’s not simply singing, it’s emoting and conjuring that emotion through ballad and song. In basic terms, it ain’t easy. Musical theatre training, learning how to emphasize words, throw your voice, and being able to put on a show through your vocals is what makes a show tune stand out from the rest. I’m still scratching my head over how immensely talented this tween is!

Beau Dermott is a school girl, and when she tells the judges which song she’s about to perform, “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked,” the look of doubt and intrigue sweeps across the judges’ table. But Beau is a smart girl, and wouldn’t choose a song if she couldn’t bring it. And bring it, she did.

Her voice is far beyond her years, and she’s got confidence for days. She’s so mind-blowingly gifted, without a doubt, she could be an understudy. Beau is so good, Amanda was transfixed from the get-go, and slammed the golden buzzer faster than you can count to two. We’ll be seeing Beau on Broadway soon enough.
