The deep and wavering ocean is teeming with life. A walk on the beach on any given day proves just how much is going on below the surface. Take a look and you can see little fish swimming in the shallow water. You might catch a few starfish, or even see jellyfish! And, if you go deeper with a snorkel or even way deeper on a dive, you’ll see all kinds of creatures and coral. There’s a whole new world under there, and it’s never a dull moment.
So, when an unexpected friend from the ocean decided to come up to land and say hi, you have to appreciate the gesture. It doesn’t happen very often, so when it does, it’s pretty cool. And in a situation like this, it becomes totally meta. The humor in this encounter is just too good.
The video opens to a group of Navy SEALS. It’s training day, and they are hitting the water for their drill. They are suited up in wetsuits with their flippers in hand when all of a sudden, they get a last-minute recruit.
Following just behind the group, a baby seal appears out of nowhere and decides to tag along! He’s young but full of life and energy. The pup must have seen the group, and got excited, wanting to tag along for the outing. He waddles up to them, splashing and frolicking around. He’s like the really eager recruit trying to keep up with everyone else!
Apparently, it’s not uncommon for baby seals to get estranged from their mothers. According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, “Seal pups spend a very short amount of time with their mothers. The hooded seal, for instance, only spends four days nursing from its mother. After that, they are on their own to learn how to hunt and survive. Few seal pups are maternally dependent.” So, even though the baby appears to look a little lost and confused, he’s figuring out this thing called life. He’s safe and him being alone is normal. He just got a little excited when he saw some real human SEALS!
Oh, the humor in it all! This baby seal will never know how truly comical and meaningful his appearance is!
