When you’ve been in the industry for as long as Andrea Bocelli has, surely you’ve learned a thing or five along the way. He’s a seasoned performer, delighting us with countless performances, singles, album releases, live appearances, you name it. The tenor’s outstanding career is one coveted by many and achieved by only a few.
A part of his success comes from the support of his beautiful and doting wife and manager, Veronica Berti. The two met at a party over a decade ago, and Andrea confesses he was struck by her voice and the way her skin felt. That night he sang her an aria and says, “It was the quickest, speediest start because we moved in with each other that same night. Effectively, the marriage began when we met.”
Wow. Talk about the kind of love we’ve all dreamed about! Does it get more romantic? Apparently, it does. While on tour, Andrea brought his wife along with him for a private concert in Portofino, Italy. Sitting at a table amongst the crowd, the host briefly explains how they wanted Andrea to sing the song “Qualche Stupido” in Italian (“Something Stupid” originally done by Frank and Nancy Sinatra in 1966, then redone by Nicole Kidman and Robbie Williams), but he needed a partner. Without hesitation, Andrea mentioned his wife could sing, so they demoed it – and it came so well, the couple was asked to perform together at the private event.
The crowd claps, the Spanish guitar is strummed and the two voices immediately start to sing together. Their vocals intertwine beautifully, carrying and supporting each other with a floating harmonization that really makes this duet memorable. It’s also their love story that adds weight to the song. You can hear it in their voices that they are singing to each other with only each other in mind. This is a particularly touching performance because it’s so intimate and everyone feels like they’re a part of it.
It’s pretty remarkable too that Veronica is singing with one of the world’s most incredible talents. She isn’t afraid, or shy, and seems to hold her own very well. At about halfway, the couple gets up from the table to the stage where they sing the final verse, and finish wonderfully with a “Ti amo,” (I love you in Italian) and two subtle kisses on the cheeks. Just perfect!
