Bullied Teen Girl Sings Aretha Franklin And Earns Golden Buzzer

Moving to a new country where you don’t know the language or anything about the culture is difficult for anyone at any age. Granted, the younger you are, the more of an advantage you have, however, that comes with its own set of struggles: fitting into new social circles during formative years; pronouncing things wrong or asking seemingly silly questions in class because you don’t understand. Or, how about taking in a whole new culture when you’ve only known one for your entire life? All these factors can cast you aside as a misfit.

For 15-year-old Amanda Mena, originally from the Dominican Republic, she went through the exact same thing. With English as her second language, she didn’t fit in, and as a result, was bullied by other kids her age.

So Amanda found joy in pursuing music and singing, finally making her way to the “America’s Got Talent” stage. At first, she stands before the judges nervous and shaking a little. She reveals that her experiences have really connected her to her music, bringing her to where she is today. The judges are interested and curious as to what this young girl has to offer. “Are you ready to wow us? Go ahead, young lady!” Says Howie, and off she goes.

Amanda has chosen to sing Aretha Franklin’s “Natural Woman,” a robust and womanly song for a teenager to pull off. But the judges and audience are delightfully surprised when the girl brings all she’s got! Her voice is big and strong and carries the music and lyrics with ease. There’s no strain or stress. Amanda flows, picking up speed and confidence as the crowd shows her love through their cheering and wild applause. It’s when Amanda really hits it by holding a long high note that all bets are off. This girl’s got it.

So much so, Simon commends her genuine natural soul and says that this is an audition the judges will remember for a long time. As if that’s not enough, Mel B says, “My gosh, where do I start? That was just incredible. I got goose pimples all over. I love you, I love your voice, and this is what I’m going to say to all those bullies…” as she reaches over to slam down the golden buzzer, giving Amanda an audition she’ll never forget!
