If you’re a collector, then you very well know that there comes a time when you go back to your vast collection of things (and this can be anything from postcards and stamps, all the way to socks or other special memorabilia) and decide to part with it. Now, you may not throw your entire collection away, but there’s no point in keeping everything. Right? I know I have taken a fair share of my old postcards and recycled them — no use to me anymore, but a ton of use to the environment! I think everyone would agree with recycling old goods. Unless, of course, you collect coins, then there’s no throwing anything away. Who throws away money?
If by chance, you are a coin collector, then you may actually be in for some luck! Because reports have it that there are ancient dimes circulating which may be worth up to $2 million! And let us tell you that a man has recently purchased this time at an auction for just a little bit less than that amount!
The dime in question is known to be one of the rarest coins in the world and it’s the 1894-S Barber dime. According to the Heritage Auction, it is one of three of numismatic rarities in the United States — the other two being 1913 Liberty nickel and the 1804 dollar. I didn’t even know this — you learn something new every day.
It was at the Heritage Auction last year that a man bought the 1894-S Barber dime for a grand total of $1,997,500. This is quite unlikely given that a majority of the coins that are auctioned at the Heritage Auction go for just hundreds of dollars.
It’s said to believe that only 10 of these rare dimes now exist. The Heritage Auction says if you claim to have this dime, they will give you $10,000 to see the dime and authenticate it. Now isn’t that something? Would you be interested in something like this? Tell us in the comments, we’d love to know what you have to say!
