If you reside in Canada, you’re aware of how big of a deal Canada Day is. The holiday, which has fallen on July 1 every year since 1867, commemorates the day that Canada officially passed its Constitution Act, the British North America Act, and became one with all three colonies within the British Empire. In a way, it’s the Canadian version of the U.S.’s Fourth of July (Independence Day).
But with the pandemic going on, Canada Day might have been celebrated a little differently by a lot of people. Some may have chosen to not doing anything in honor of the national holiday. Others may have chosen to celebrate from the safety of their home. But one thing’s for certain: Canada Day is, and always will be, treasured by Canadians, and it’s going to come annually as it always had.
97-year-old Dorothy Rose knows just how important July 1 is for her fellow Canadians, which is why she decided to use her beautiful voice to sing for her neighbors as a way to celebrate and bring people together during a dreary time. Her apartment neighbors located at 200 Erskine Ave got to enjoy her spunky yet beautiful singing this Canada Day alongside the Climax Jazz Band.
During the performance, the elderly woman wore a very bright and colorful dress, a necklace and pair of earrings containing large pearls, and multiple bracelets. Her attire was perfect to celebrate such a happy and important day. Just from the way she was dressed, the audience could be sure that she was about to put on the show of a lifetime!
The Toronto woman’s voice didn’t disappoint either. Anyone who witnessed her voice during the performance, or via video, could tell you that!
But what made her performance even more thrilling was the fact that she, despite her age and the fact that she uses a cane to walk, was so lively on stage. Her confidence was completely contagious. And, plus, her smooth dancing and big, cheesy grin could leave anyone in a good mood. Even with the lengthy number of years I’m sure she has been singing, she still has passion.
If Dorothy could teach us anything, it’s that even in our golden years, we can do “young things.” Obviously, there’s no age limit to jumping on stage and singing. However, many people as they get older tend to classify themselves as “too old” to engage in their all-time favorite hobbies, but this woman won’t let anything or anyone stop her! She’s someone we should all aim to become like as we age.
Do what you love, and love what you do. I think Dorothy would say something like that.
