Family Turns 80-Year-Old Beat Up Barn Into A Gorgeous Home

There’s something so fascinating about barns. I don’t live out in the country, but I do live in one of the top agriculture-producing counties in all of the United States. So, coming across old barns is not uncommon for me. But even if you’re not used to seeing barns where you reside, you have to admit that they’re pretty nifty. Their peeling paint, old wooden siding, unique roof, and tall ceilings make them intriguing for many of us.

Normally, barns are used to store agricultural products or shelter livestock. But these beautiful buildings aren’t limited to just that. Just ask Andrew Towne who decided to convert an 80-year-old barn on his family’s Medina, Ohio farm into a gorgeous house for him and his wife, Crystal Madrilejos, to live in.

Turning the old barn into a home wasn’t as easy as one might think. Since the barn previously housed horses, the couple wanted to ensure the structure would be safe and clean enough to move into. So, they decided to hire a company that specializes in turning barns into livable homes.

After the conversion, the once white and rugged barn was now painted a darker color on the exterior. And, as for inside the home, you wouldn’t even believe your eyes.

The company the married couple hired to complete the project worked very hard to “keep the structural integrity of the barn” while also ensuring every piece of furniture would “follow the scale of the barn.” It’s not easy considering there were different shapes and various beams in the barn that stand out from the usual home, but they got everything to work. They also made sure to keep the converted barn open-concept and include modern farmhouse-style furniture and decor, so the home could retain its barn-y feel as much as possible.

With a kitchen that leads into the dining area, lots of natural and artificial lighting, a second-story level, a relaxing loft space, and even a reading nook for Crystal, the home ended up being everything Crystal and Andrew dreamed of, plus more.

All in all, the home is stunning. The very tall ceiling and numerous windows of the barn make stepping into the home feel light and airy. The natural finishes along with its original, natural wood flooring of the converted barn offer a cozy, rustic feel. For many people including myself, this is a dream home, one that is truly one of a kind!
