Many Australian residents have been noticing positives signs since the bushfires erupted in late 2019. Australians are also happy to say that many of the worst fires on the continent have been contained thanks to the rain this month. However, many of those bushfires are still present, continuing to pose danger to humans, wildlife, the land, and nearby structures. That said, help from volunteers and kind donors is still appreciated during this tough time for Australia.
One way Australian soldiers are chipping in lately is by caring for koalas who have been driven out of their habitat due to the fires. During their time off, the 9th Brigade of the Australian Army have been building structures for and hand-feeding the critters located at the Cleland Wildlife Park.
“16 Regiment Emergency Support Force have been using their rest periods to lend a helping hand at the Cleland Wildlife Park, supporting our furry friends during feeding time and by building climbing mounts inside the park. A great morale boost for our hard working team in the Adelaide Hills,” the 9th Brigade reiterated in a Facebook post on January 23.
Along with the latter text, the 9th Brigade also included images of the kind soldiers busy at work helping their fellow koala community.
Since taking to Facebook, the post has amassed over 45,000 shares, 25,000 ‘likes,’ and 2,200 comments.
Both Australian and non-Australian residents are overwhelmed with the selfless efforts of the hardworking soldiers.
“There you go another photo showing Aussies sticking together to help any way they can. Great work fellows and gals. The future will be ours. The animals will never forget this, the kindness of people,” said one commenter.
“Those are the faces of caring, thoughtful HUMAN BEINGS! It makes me happy that they can be so gentle and caring in such a horrendous situation! There is hope!” another person comments.
Apart from caring for koalas, the Australian Army has been finding other ways to offer their helping hands during the bushfires. Cleaning up homes that have been struck by the fires, hosting events to benefit the community, clearing away debris on the land, and providing emotional support to those affected by the bushfires are other things soldiers have been doing. Some soldiers are even tending to the physical injuries of koalas across Australia.
