A Capella is still not a really popular style of music. It’s gotten as big as it has because of two reasons: the Pitch Perfect series, and Pentatonix. Pitch Perfect made A Capella fun and entertaining, but Pentatonix made A Capella cool, and with every new cover they remind us why they’re as famous as they are.
They not only cover songs they know people will love, but they also turn them into something that draws you in so much, next thing you know, you’re too close to the screen. They make everything unique, entertaining, and more.
In the video below, Pentatonix covered yet another song in a video that ended up going viral with over 24,000,000 views. Let’s talk about it now, what do you say?
The video starts with Scott Hoying, standing in the middle, singing “Hello, darkness, my old friend.” Then, the rest of the band members walk in harmonizing to him. Later, Mitch Grassi, who’s beside Scott, sings as Kevin Olusola—on the far right—starts beatboxing.
The performance already sounds so flawless, you wonder how they manage to do that. After Mitch, Matt Sallee (who stands on the far left) sings the next part, and his deep voice gives you chills! However, when he sings, “And no one dares disturb the sound of silence,” he sings a bass note that leaves you, for lack of a better word, shook! How any human can sing that deep is beyond us.
Behind him, Kirstin Maldonado sings the high harmony, and after a few moments, the whole group joins in. Then, Kirstin gets her solo, and she steps into her part unapologetically and flawlessly. Between the bass notes, the high notes, the beatboxing, the stomping, and the clapping, your breath leaves your lungs, and you’re completely lost in the performance.
When they end the song, they come together one last time for a final harmony amongst the five of them and sing a subtle but pretty crescendo.
It’s an excellent video and performance, and you understand why they received as many views. Especially when you remember that there are no instruments included—just pure voices.
One commenter even said, “Sometimes I forget this is A Capella.” Another said, “This is definitely my favorite cover of them!” This is one of our favorites too.
