Imagine going away for a couple of months and having to leave your pet behind, it’s tough to think about right? You always have qualms about leaving our beloved pets behind while we travel and go on various adventures; or, even if it isn’t for adventure and more for a personal reason, the pets usually have to stay behind. Pet owners are worried about whether their dog/cat/horse will be ok while they’re gone. Dogs and cats often manage well with their sitters, but what about something like a horse?
If you haven’t spent much time around horses, you may not realize that they are intelligent, sensitive animals. Because in the wild they would have been considered “prey,” they have highly developed senses that help to keep them safe from predators. Horses’ sight, smell, hearing, and body are designed to sense danger and allow them to escape if need be.
Horses have the unique ability to see nearly all the way around their bodies, with a blind spot directly in front. They can also see things well at a long distance. They have a highly developed sense of smell, and their ears can move back and forth to hear sounds from all around.
Because they are so sensitive, it stands to reason that they can remember certain things, both good and bad. They remember things that frightened them but also recall positive experiences and the things that go along with them. They can even remember certain people and the way that a person smells, sounds, and uses their body — whether they are a calm, relaxed presence, or a nervous, frightening one. If you spend a significant amount of time with a horse, the chances are that they will remember you, good or bad.
After a vacation of several weeks, the woman in this video wondered if her beloved horse would even remember who she was. Upon arriving home, she went to the field to see her friend. She approached the gate and called out. The horse lifted its head in response, still not sure who was waiting across the field. Then, it realizes who is there.
