If there’s one thing that we all love about siblings, it’s that they will always have your back. Siblings will fight for you until the end, and the young girl in the video is a fantastic example of this. Only she’s taking things one step further for her little brother. “My name’s Sophia. I’m 7-years-old, and I need your help.” That’s how the video down below begins, as the little girl starts introducing herself.
The clip is about Sophia begging the world to help save her little brother from a rare disease, which we’ll talk about more in a second. She explains, first, that she needs help because her brother, Carter Sarkar, is very special to her, and if he were to die, she’d be heartbroken.
Carter has Sanfilippo, also known as Childhood Alzheimer’s. He was diagnosed when he was just 6-years-old, and though the news was devastating, Sophia didn’t let anything get in her way.
She fights for her brother and spreads awareness to help save him. Her mother says that she is amazing and phenomenal. She shares that, “She is honestly the best big sister. She cheers louder and prouder for any of his accomplishments.”
Sanfilippo is a brain disorder that makes Carter meet milestones a little later than most kids, but as mom says, Sophia is always there to cheer him on when he makes even the smallest accomplishment. Mom shares that sometimes Carter will be fine one second, and the next, he’ll completely forget where he is.
Sadly, according to the Sarkar family, he will eventually lose the ability to talk, swallow, and walk. He’ll have dementia, too. Right now, he’s able to play with Sophia and his family, he dances and sings, and is called a bit of a daredevil, but slowly, what he knows starts going away.
But his family isn’t giving up. They started a GoFundMe called “Saving Carter” to raise a million dollars to find a cure. All proceeds from Sophia’s video and the campaign, according to Inside Edition, go to a clinical trial that could change Carter’s life and give him a chance to live, and this is Sophia’s ultimate wish.
