A piano is meant to be played. Whether lonely, abandoned, cold on the side of the street or warm in a home, its ivories are there for the sole purpose of being tickled! What good is a piano if no one hammers down on its keys? Even better is when an unassuming person who knows how to rip out a fabulous song plays it and wows everyone – by complete surprise.
Cue this traffic warden walking down the street on a rather gray-looking and rainy day. It’s miserable out but this officer has a trick up his sleeve that’s about to totally blow his cover!
That’s because, well, he’s not really a cop. It’s Brendan Kavanagh, better known as Dr. K. He’s a professional pianist who loves to go undercover and put on impromptu shows in unlikely environments. He’s also the master of disguise, usually dressing up in one way or another to really throw the audience off. And today is no different!
“Officer K” is strolling down the sidewalk when he spots a tilted piano left outside in the rain. It’s leaning against a pole, looking awfully sorry for itself but not for long. “Officer K” walks right up to it, and without missing a beat, says, “…it’s not every day you see an abandoned piano on the side of the road…” And before you can even blink, his hands are flying across the keys, banging out a lively boogie-woogie.
Even on such an awkward angle – the piano has to be on a 130-degree angle – “Officer K” isn’t even slightly daunted. His playing is wonderful to listen to, and although he doesn’t have a crowd, surely the cars whizzing by on the busy street are curious as to what the heck an officer is doing getting distracted by a piano!
There’s an ambulance with sirens rushing by at which point “Officer K” briefly looks up and acknowledges it, but then jumps right back into the opening of his jazzy tune. He’s crushing it! He’s got his head bobbing up and down in synch with his playing and he’s just rocking out, having a good time on this miserable looking day! “Officer K” carries on for moments, clearly enjoying his performance that’s adding a little color and sparkle to his surroundings. How great would it be to live in one of the apartments behind him and wake up listening to his piano playing? Lovely street performance, indeed!
