Two Men Escape From Nursing Home To Go To Heavy Metal Festival

I’d like to think that no matter old we all get, we still know how to have fun. When we’re younger, we tend to look at our parents and grandparents as these older, wiser folks who live responsible, if boring, lives. They work, pay bills, and take care of their homes and families.

But, it’s important to remember that every parent and grandparent was a young person once. There’s nothing to say that getting older means that we have to give up the things that we enjoyed when we were young. Recently, two men in a nursing home in Germany took this to heart and were determined to go to a heavy metal music festival, which resulted in a frantic search by the local authorities.

According to the original story:

“After a short panic and search, two German nursing home escapees were found ‘dazed and disoriented’ but safe — at a heavy metal concert. The elderly men went missing during the day, prompting the nursing home staff to call the police. After hours of searching, officers located the old headbangers at Wacken Open Air, the world’s largest heavy metal festival, at 3 a.m. They reportedly traveled 25 miles via public transportation to get there and ended up taking a taxi home, with a police escort.”

Police were concerned but were eventually able to convince the duo that they should leave the festival and go back to the nursing home.

“We had to explain to them why they had to go home,” police spokesman Peter Berndt told the Washington Post. “But in the end, they went back voluntarily.”

“They obviously liked the metal festival,” police spokeswoman Merle Neufeld added. “The care home quickly organized return transport after police picked them up.”

At the end of the day, I’m really happy that these two men made it home safely. But, more than that, I’m ecstatic that they got to spend a day doing something that they clearly enjoy. It meant enough to them that they were willing to break out and head on over.

Furthermore, if you’ve ever been to a heavy metal concert, you can probably understand being ‘dazed and disoriented’ after a long day of impossibly loud music and crowds of rowdy fans. Not to mention, headbanging makes you pretty dizzy.

Let’s all let these two gentlemen serve as a reminder that we’re never too old to enjoy the things that truly bring us happiness. Rock On!
