Whenever I have to do something scary, I tend to raise my hand to go first. Seriously. It sounds like the last thing you’d want to do before making a big leap, but in my experience, it’s the best thing to do. When I signed up for bungee jumping, I was shaking like a leaf, berating myself in my head for thinking I could do this! “I can’t do this, this is way too scary!” When the instructor asked who wanted to jump first, I felt my arm shoot up. Even though I put my arm up, I really didn’t want to do it! I quickly pulled my arm down, but it was too late. He saw me, and because I had committed, he urged me to jump. And let me say this: it was the best decision, ever. I didn’t have to watch each nervous person take their time before me, I didn’t have to see them struggle to rally, or see anyone cry, scream or toss their cookies! There was no suspense. Nope, it was just like ripping off a band-aid, and it was absolutely liberating! This is a really good approach and has served me well whenever I have to face my fears.
So, for 16-year-old Olivia Garcia from the UK, who had to bring it to the judges of the “X-Factor UK Chair Challenge,” as the last contestant, I can somewhat relate to what she’s feeling. All of that built up fear and pressure of having to impress the bigwigs, while being at the bottom of the ladder, is not a piece of cake.
The poor girl is shaking like a leaf when she steps on stage and sees all six seats filled, knowing she’s really got to give it all she’s got. She introduces herself and says, “Even though I’m the last person to perform today, I’m not going down without a fight. I’m going to get one of those seats. I hope I can do you proud, Simon. I’m going to try my hardest!” The crowd goes wild, and she eases into her song choice, “Changing” by Paloma Faith.
Normally a high energy song, Olivia slows it down and blows it up! Her nerves dissipate and she gains confidence while singing. Her low voice suits the key and tone, making her delivery powerful and well-received by the judges, who look at her in awe. Simon has to make a choice. If he wants to take on Olivia, he’s got to cut another girl already in the chair. It’s a tough moment for him and the poor girl who gets booted. Who gets to go so Olivia can stay?
