Love is a many splendored thing! It feels fun and dangerous and exciting at first then develops into something more profound and more whole! It can lift you out of the doldrums of your day and suddenly fill your life with high definition color. Being in love means getting to hang out and build meaning with your best friend!
But if you’ve never been in love, I guess it’s hard to know what it feels like. It’s already hard enough to describe it but not having that experience means you just wouldn’t know! Whether you’ve never been kissed or fallen head over heels, it’s all a part of the human experience. While Joseph O’Brien hasn’t ever really been romantically involved, I’m pretty sure after this audition he’ll have a line around the block for him!
Joseph is 20-years-old from Columbia, Tennessee, USA. The lanky, curly-haired teen takes to the stage sounding nervous but is still pleasantly chipper and chatty. He has a couple of exchanges with the judges when it’s revealed that he hasn’t been too lucky in love. The judges are shocked, unsure how a handsome young man like him could be such a late bloomer. Regardless, they’re not here to discuss his personal life; they want to hear this guy sing!
Joseph sits at the keyboard, and just lets it rip! The young man is singing the 80s love song, “Hello” by Lionel Richie and it sounds fantastic! It’s slowed down, simplified and it’s music to the room’s ears. From his first uttered word, you can tell this kid has talent. His voice is soft and smooth and has a pretty tone to it. He very well could be the next Justin Bieber or Shawn Mendes.
Joseph seriously crushes his audition with grace, and that’s not even the best part. What’s the best part, you ask? Although he claims he’s a little behind in the romance department, he sings with a lot of love and emotion. It’s all inside and all there to share.
As Simon put it at the end of his performance, “There will be a lot of snogging after people see this audition!” Joseph got four yeses and a lot of clapping and cheering from the audience!
I think this was one of the most heartfelt auditions I’ve seen in a while. What are your thoughts?
