When an animal is in danger, our first instinct is to act on it. Many may call humans selfish, but the thing is, we are empathetic creatures by nature. Helping others is in our b***d. Wouldn’t you agree? If you need a story to prove it then you’re in the right place. On July 28, 2016, when a 13-year-old horse named Cupcake slipped on wet grass and accidentally landed herself in a swamp, she didn’t have the strength to help herself back out. That’s when the horse’s owner, Rianne Juarez attempted to help her.
Unfortunately, Rianne struggled with saving the 1,000-pound horse and called someone to help: the local park rangers. They then called the South Metro Fire Rescue team and a veterinarian to the scene to ensure Cupcake would be safe both during and after the rescue.
Upon arrival, a group of 15 firefighters got right to work after the veterinarian gave Cupcake a nutritional shot. Some rescuers kept the horse’s head off the ground to ensure she wouldn’t drown while others physically attempted to bring the horse back on her feet.
Through the images and video footage of Cupcake’s tragedy, and eventually her rescue, it is clear that she was not feeling her best. Her facial expressions depict that she had given up and was prepared to drown in the murky waters of the swamp. She didn’t seem too thrilled even when rescuers were trying to help her.
Dr. Rice, the veterinarian, closely monitored the horse, and staff from 12 Mile Stables provided her with fluids to help her get all the energy back. While the task was not easy, considering Cupcake’s weight in addition to the exhaustion she was feeling, the rescuers eventually helped her up. But that wasn’t the end because the rescue was not 100 percent complete. The horse now had to walk back to safe grounds. But with the help of her human team, Cupcake successfully powered through the journey at a surprisingly quick rate and was safe.
If it weren’t for Cupcake’s owner noticing her struggling horse and then calling the right people for help, the poor horse would not have been found alive.
While Cupcake felt hopeless while stuck in the swamp, her endurance towards the end of the video was inspiring in that despite having dealt with a tragedy and fearing for her life (literally), she was able to push through with help from others.
