Everything I know about makeup, I learned through trial and error. I’ve always just figured my way out when it came to navigating eyeliner and deciphering bronzer. Eyeshadow, mascara and lip gloss, I’ve just always done my best to learn the ropes! And I do the same routine every day. I’ve never taken a class, but I seem to do alright, I think! It takes practice and time, but it’s doable, and anyone can learn!
Just like Des Monahan from Ireland. His wife Mona, who had been applying her own makeup and styling her own hair for years, started to go blind. Her motor skills gradually became shaky, and the vision in her right eye began to deteriorate rapidly. One day, when the couple went to the makeup counter for a little touch up before a birthday party, it was then that Des had a brilliant idea.
Des and Mona have been married for 56 years, and have been through thick and thin together, so they’ve supported each other through it all! It was at the counter with make-up artist Rosie O’Driscoll that she says Des was insistent on learning and “[Des] took the brushes from my hand and wanted to have a try.” The man knew what he had to do to help his wife feel her best.
Rosie was so touched that Des wanted to learn how to apply makeup because Mona couldn’t anymore. He wanted her to look beautiful since makeup helped her feel that way. The woman was so touched by their story that she posted about them on her social media. Soon after, celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, who has glamorously done up famous faces like the Kardashians and Ariana Grande, took note of the couple’s love story and wanted them to join him for one of his Master Classes in London – a prestigious class that’s hard to get in to.
Mario’s class is high-end and technical, the perfect environment for Des and Mona to attend so Des could sharpen his skills. The celebrity artist brought them in and took his time with the couple, giving Des personalized tips and tricks specifically for Mona! I don’t think it’s possible for my heart to gush any harder! What a beautiful story about true soul mates.
