When we were younger, my sister and I wanted to be singers. We both dreamt of being famous one day and having our own girl band that people would come out to see. For practice, we would pick our favorite pop songs, dress up to the best of our ability, and stand in front of the bathroom mirror and sing our hearts out. Yup, we were singers in the making. We definitely didn’t get far in our endeavors, but some siblings are doing big things when it comes to singing, things like appearing on shows like “The Voice.”
“The Voice,” a television singing competition, has been known as a showcase for solo artists. But recently, on Australia’s version of the show, a group called “Homegrown” managed to impress the judges. The sibling trio is made up of Katelyn, Kasey, and Liam O’Donoghue. Their recent audition blew the judges and the studio audience away.
Katelyn, 20, Liam, 18, and Kasey, 15, have been singing together since they were just little kids. Growing up in Queensland, Australia, they began singing for crowds early and regularly performed in front of an audience at festivals and various competitions. A lifetime of performing in front of audiences explains the poise and professionalism that they showed on “The Voice” stage — faced with such a huge moment and an immense amount of pressure, they never faltered.
The trio performed “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman, a risky song choice because many people may not recognize the tune. But, the song was perfectly suited to their style. They started with an a cappella intro before Liam joined in on the guitar, at which point Katelyn began her solo performance of the first verse. Kasey then joined her sister, with a slightly higher range.
It wasn’t long before all four judges had turned their chairs around, curious to see the three people on stage. Boy George took a little longer than the rest but eventually gave in. Though the song was originally performed by a single singer, the siblings’ arrangement took advantage of each group member’s talents. The result was a rich, multi-layered audition.
Since all four judges had turned around, the group had to choose their team, and they eventually settled on Joe Jonas. I can’t wait to see how they fare in the competition!
