Big Sis Plays “You Are My Sunshine” To Little Brother With Down Syndrome

Music is a universal language, able to dissolve what makes us different and unite what makes us similar. I can’t imagine a world without it! It’s amazing how much healing power is in a simple melody with a few simple words. There are so much love and light packed into the rhythm and beat that fills our ears.

Even if you don’t speak the same language, you can connect to someone through the tune of the music. The sound brings people together—if two people like the song, there’s an instant connection, no matter if the two of you are foreign to one another. Even if you can’t speak at all, music will help you relay so many emotions to those you love. This story is a beautiful example of this analogy.

The classic song, “You Are My Sunshine” is a perfect example of what it means when music enlightens your day. Its simplicity is beautiful and timeless, and when this little boy with Down Syndrome sings along, you can feel your heart gushing.

Two-year-old toddler, Bo, is sitting with his older sister, Lydia, who’s playing the song on her guitar. While her voice is sweet and kind, she’s leading the song for her little brother. As she gets going, Bo chirps in words here and there, finishing off the verse Lydia starts. Parents, Amanda and Caleb, love this song. They sang it to Bo while he was recovering from heart surgery, and it has become their theme song.

Amanda says that Bo only knows 12 words and in this video, he’s picking up new words as they go along. In fact, every word he’s ever learned is through music. Surely this is a huge moment for the family who loves and supports the boy immensely. This is such an adorable video, and the duet gets a few more voices near the end!
