I can’t count how many times I’ve been to the doctor, or how many times I’ve broken all ten of my toes. I’ve even broken a few fingers, my ankle and had a few bouts of pneumonia. It’s safe to say I’ve been to the hospital countless times in my life. Although I’ve yet to experience a life or death medical emergency, I can only imagine the devastating physical and financial consequences that come along with severe illness or injury.
Plenty of Americans struggle with the financial strain of covering the costs of high medical expenses. It’s a reality that hits home for many, especially for the people who attend a local Texas church, led by Pastor Stephen Hayes who knows this story all too well.
At 17-years-old, Pastor Hayes suffered a terrible accident when he was hit by a car while crossing the street. He lay in a coma for 12 days before he awoke, where the long road to recovery and a massive pile of medical bills was just beginning. Pastor Hayes said, “My family has known the crushing weight that can come with medical debt.”
Led by Pastor Hayes and his seriously committed team, the Covenant Church in Dallas worked alongside the non-profit organization, The RIP Medical Debt, that locates, buys and forgives the debts of American’s by buying out their debt for pennies on the dollar. With the church’s contribution of $100,000 to the organization, they helped veterans and families within a 20-mile radius between the churches’ three locations. The donation was able to help pay off $10,551,618 in medical debt for 4,229 Dallas families.
Health truly is wealth. What an incredible burden lifted, and wiped clean.
