Dance allows us to free ourselves from ourselves. It’s a space where our bodies are invited to move, and where time doesn’t exist, as you get lost in the moment and the music. Dance gives us the freedom to express ourselves, through all kinds of genres from pointe ballet to jazz to reggae and beyond.
This is Annika, and she is competing in the Youth America Grand Prix 2015 European Competition in Paris, France. She is nearing the end of the competition and pulls out all the stops during this semi-final routine that is brilliantly executed — both stunningly creative and wonderful to watch.
Annika appears to be wearing the typical ballerina attire when she first peeks out from the side of the curtain. As she leaps on across the stage, it’s noticeable that her outfit isn’t what a normal ballerina wears – it’s a split costume that is one half pink fluffy tutu and tights, and the other half, a black leotard.
It is in this spectacular performance that Annika shows off her deep understanding and passion for both types of dance – classical ballet and modern hip-hop. She seamlessly stitches the two genres together to create a dynamic fusion that no one saw coming. Her combination of flow and breaks gives her the upper hand when it comes to creativity and standing out – it’s impossible to forget an outpouring of talent like this. Bravo!
