Straight lines, symmetry, patterns, tight formation, in sync choreography – these are goals dancers everywhere aspire for, and so do I. Thankfully, I don’t have to worry about 49 other dancers. It’s usually just me, the music and my mirror as I tighten up my technique. Sometimes there’s a hairbrush as a microphone involved.
I’m definitely a few steps behind the Azurette drill team at Copper Hills High School in Utah because these girls run a tight ship. Just a quick distinction, in case you’re not up to speed: drill teams are not the same as cheerleading. A drill team does zero cheering, and while they do perform at halftime for sporting events, this is a competitive sport with high-stakes competitions. There are no stunts and jumps. However, there is impeccable coordination, dancing and a spectacular show involved.
The Azurette drill team, as seen in this video, takes their sport very seriously. Their lines are straight, their symmetry a perfect reflection, their formation top notch and their choreography on point. Their routine is set against some heavy techno music that is the perfect backdrop for their high energy intricate moves.
You can see their dance moves are in time with the special effects sounds added for emphasis. They’ve incorporated a few acrobatics and precision moves where timing is everything – miss a beat and you’re on your face, which doesn’t happen to any of these girls. They’ve practiced long and hard to come up with such a flawless and supremely creative execution.
Oh, and they took home first place. Click below to see their impressive routine that ticked all of the judges’ boxes.
