Everyone has a favorite flick. Their one go-to, pick-you-up-when-you’re-down movie that starts the same way unfolds the same way and ends the same way. It’s reliable, unwavering and you always know what you’re going to get.
This is Zeus, the English Mastiff and he’s watching his fave film, The Jungle Book, from 2016. He is entranced, staring at the screen and tilting his head left and right, the way dogs do when they are fully immersed.
Although scientists aren’t entirely sure why dogs tip their head from side to side, some of the reasons are because they want to understand and hear and see better. Notice how Zeus doesn’t even take his eyes off the screen. He is listening intently, but then feels like he wants to participate more, so he stands up, completely emotionally invested.
As the wolves onscreen start to howl more, so does Zeus, but not solo. He isn’t howling loudly because he’s excited. It almost sounds as if he’s sad that he’s not there. His subtle howls are empathy howls, connoting a sense of melancholy. Zeus looks like he wishes he was part of the pack, so he does his best to show that he’s there in spirit.
