There are only a couple of favorite pass times that I heavily indulge in. One of these has to be watching sports, preferably things like basketball, gymnastics, the odd soccer, and my most favorite, ice skating! So, when the Olympics are right around the corner (the winter Olympics) I am one very happy person. Why? It means I get to make a hot cup of cocoa and watch a whole bunch of skating, that too at competition level, right from the comfort of my living room.
I’m excited to announce that the Winter Olympics will be here before we know it. That means watching all kinds of sports like bobsledding, downhill skiing, snowboarding, and many others that I wouldn’t usually pay any attention to. World class athletes will all meet in one place, represent their home country, and do their best to bring home bronze, silver, or a coveted gold medal. For some, they will rise to the occasion and give the best performance of their lives, while others will make a mistake and go home heartbroken.
We watch the Olympics for a few weeks every couple of years if you count both the winter and summer events. We see some of the most exciting competition the world has to offer. But, what we don’t see is what goes on behind the scenes, including the years of hard work, training, and competing that bring these athletes to the games.
Many athletes will sacrifice a “normal” life to train for the Olympics. It’s early mornings, long training sessions, and working through injuries. It means devoting all of their time and energy to becoming the best in the world.
Finally, the Olympics arrive, and it is time to hopefully be rewarded for all of the hard work that it took to get there. Four years ago, a Russian ice-skating duo decided to make the best of the huge Olympic stage. Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov gave a flawless skating performance, creating an electric atmosphere for the judges and audience with a challenging routine.
They skated to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” and put everything they had into the routine. Their years of training showed as they performed move after an amazing move. But, they saved the best for last — a risky trick that left the entire crowd speechless.
