81-year-old Evelyn Williams, a great-grandma from a teeny town in Ireland, deserves to have her own talk show where she can share her stories and sing. The charming widow has a personality that packs a punch, and she’s as sharp as a tack. In her pre-show interview and onstage, Evelyn opens up about her life in detail.
She takes the stage, donning a beautifully embroidered dress, and wearing high heeled leopard print wedges. Her curly hair is wild, her make up on point, and her nails polished a fresh mint green. Evelyn warms up the judges, one of them even mouthing the words, “I love her…” off-screen, as she mentally prepares to launch into song.
Upon Evelyn’s onstage entrance, the judges appear curious. There’s no skepticism, just keen interest as to what this little great-grandma has in store. Evelyn performs the evocative “Send In The Clowns” made famous by American folk singer-songwriter Judy Collins, and the judges are entranced.
Evelyn’s performance is infused with emotion as she channels the spirits of the loved ones she’s lost. Her delivery is heavy and pronounced, obvious that the song is near and dear to her heart. Her granddaughter and best friend are in the audience, proud of Evelyn for wearing her heart on her sleeve.
She closes her performance, breaking down in tears. The audience cannot contain themselves, everyone standing up, including the judges and the host – there’s not a dry eye in the house. Judge Michelle Visage is the first to slam her golden buzzer, and the crowd turns up a few notches, with confetti dropping and the cheering soaring.
