Though the days are getting longer and the sun is feeling just a little bit warmer, it’s still winter here. Even though we have had one of the warmest Februarys on record, March never fails to remind us that winter isn’t quite over yet. It was 80 degrees last week, but next week there is a chance of snow!
Each winter, I put a couple of bird feeders in the tree in front, just beyond my porch. I love watching the robins, cardinals, and even the grumpy blue jays drop in for food when the ground is frozen. As much as I love seeing these birds, I can’t help but be anxious for summer, when I can hang out my hummingbird feeders and enjoy watching my most favorite little birds.
As soon as the weather warms up, I’ll hang two feeders on each end of the porch. They’re both brightly colored and filled with sugar water to attract the tiny, hovering hummingbirds. I never tire of watching their nearly invisible wings as they enjoy their food and dart around. However, the reason that I have two feeders is that this teeny little birds can actually be quite aggressive and territorial. Two feeders give them a chance to spread out, and we have fewer hummingbird arguments.
This kind of behavior is common among hummingbirds, which makes this video even more amazing. In a single birdbath, a photographer captured more than 30 hummingbirds together! A group of them is actually called a “charm,” and these little guys certainly are charming! Though they definitely enjoyed their bath, the photographer shared that it wasn’t long before they started showing their typical hummingbird colors, and were actively harassing one another. Still, it’s a fantastic sight!
