Summertime means road trip time! Nothing like packing up the car with your luggage and your favorite people to hit the smooth road and drive somewhere new. It’s the best way to see sights you’ve never laid eyes on, take in new places and learn things you didn’t know about the people occupying the car with you! It’s fun, educational and rarely boring – you just want to make sure you have a good driver!
Now, everyone around the world uses roads to get from point A to point B, but it’s important to note that not all roads are in good condition. While some are maintained, especially in urban areas, others located in the far reaches of the wilderness are not. And depending on how far you’re going for how long and how adventurous you are, some roads are a little (ok, a lot) scarier than others!
In this video, we’ve got 10 of the world’s most dangerous roads. And as scary as they are, they will definitely make you very grateful for your daily commute – no matter how long you have to travel. Take the Tianmen Mountain road in Zhangjiajie, China, for example. It’s a short 11 km strip, but with an elevation change of 1,100m from start to finish, this is no leisurely stroll in the park! Oh, and add in the staggering 99 hairpin turns and you’ve got yourself one heck of a ride! While it isn’t as narrow as some of the other roads listed, this is a very twisty-and-turny stretch that’s enough to make any driver nervous!
In contrast, the Eyre Highway is a 1,600 km highway linking Western Australia and Southern Australia via the Nullarbor Plain, and through my own experience, I know plains to be as dull as dishwater. They are flat, featureless and straight, and are usually desolate and barren – just like this highway. In fact, this long stretch of road is so remote and boring, motorists have trouble paying attention and fall asleep at the wheel, ending up in terrible accidents. As a result, the highway has been nicknamed “Slaughter Alley.” Best to load up on good, rock n roll music and keep it turned up! These are just a few of the ten highlighted, and wow, are they ever fascinating like the highway built through the side of a mountain, and a road that disappears when the tide comes in!
